Day 1

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I woke up this morning and realized with horror that there would be no more Starbucks runs. Yes, I will admit it, I am a Starbucks addict. I don’t go there every day, but I do go at least once a week. I can’t help it. The allure of a Starbucks Doubleshot on Ice and a scone or coffee cake is just too much.

But Starbucks is not SPEWD free. Not even close. So, when Jackson woke up at 6:15 this morning, we went downstairs. While he was drinking rice milk from his straw cup and eating oatmeal, I made fresh SPEWD free cherry muffins (check the recipe page if you want to make some). I also dug out my French press so I could make some coffee…..

Before I could eat or drink anything however, I had to do one big thing. I had to weigh myself. Now, I am not about to make the claim that eating SPEWD free for a month is going to help me lose weight. I am curious though. So I fired up the scale and looked. (I am about to go where no female has gone before so brace yourselves) 140lbs. I am 5′2″ so this isn’t a great weight for me. But I love myself and I am not stressing about it. I want to see where I am in 30 days…..

So today turned out to not be bad at all. I didn’t miss anything. I ate lots of fruits and veggies and made some yummy eggplant with polenta for dinner……I’ll keep you posted.

Morgan Spurlock, watch out! (For the next 30 days……)

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I will be the first to admit that I haven’t exactly been living a SPEWD free life. It’s not that we avoid eating SPEWD free. It’s just impossible to go out to dinner or for coffee and avoid Soy, Peanuts, Egg, Wheat and Dairy. Honestly, I don’t know too many people who cut certain foods out of their diets entirely just because their child is allergic to the food.

Just so you know, every recipe on this site is something that we have eaten and liked. I am not just posting random recipes. I have personally cooked and consumed all the recipes on this site…..

So for the next 30 days(and hopefully longer) we will not consume Soy,Peanuts,Eggs,Wheat, or Dairy. Tomorrow we will go to Whole Foods and Henry’s and stock up.

And Monday it’s on….my husband,Ben, and I have a bet that the other one won’t last the 30 days. I know he is going to lose. :-)

Stay Tuned…..

Canadian Government Announces New Food Labeling Requirements

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

The Canadian Government announced new food labeling requirements. Up until now it looks like Canada had the same sort of labeling system that we have in the U.S., where all ingredients were required to be listed. And just like in the U.S. some components of foods were exempt from this law. For instance, lactose can be in a product and it doesn’t have to be declared as dairy. I have also noticed that Gluten is hidden in a lot of products. It really bothers me, because it means I have to scrutinize every single label. (Who would have thought there was hidden dairy in deli turkey?)

So Canada is passing a stricter law that would require manufacturers to declare all sulphites, gluten and allergy sources. I am thinking of moving to Canada for Jackson’s sake.

Nestle’ Recalls Lean Pocket Spinach Artichoke Chicken

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Nestle’ is recalling Lean Pocket Spinach Artichoke Chicken flavor after plastic pieces were found in them.

I know, these things have every allergen in the book, but they work for a quick lunch for non allergenic moms like me…..I keep them about a hundred feet from Jackson at all times, though.

Allergen Free Peanuts?

Monday, July 21st, 2008

How cool would it be if the scientists out there could genetically modify peanuts so that they were allergen free? Well, believe it or not, they are working on it!

Click here to see the article

According to the article, the scientists can not take out ALL of the allergens, but they could make it so that if someone who is allergic to peanuts eats one, they won’t go into anaphylactic shock. I’m not sure that I would give Jackson a non-allergenic peanut. But at least the person sitting next to him on an airplane wouldn’t send him into shock. Read this article. It is so cool. The researchers are saying that in the next ten years, food allergies could be gone!!

I’ll try not to get my hopes up.
