Food Allergies a way to get out of eating unwanted food?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I came across an article in the Huffington Post today (I don’t usually read the Huffington Post, but I was looking for any new food allergy news)  about whether or not to drink around an alcoholic. At first the article didn’t appear to have anything to do with food allergies….And it doesn’t except for one sentence. One sentence that made me fume inside.

Here it is : “A lot of us have friends who irritate us with their “food allergies,” which is oft code for “I don’t like this or that.” This is not the case with alcoholics who are, we hope, recovering from a disease.”

To read the whole article click here : To drink or not to drink with your alcoholic, lesbian sister?

Mr Petrow, is writing a manners column, but he doesn’t seem to have much in the way of manners himself. I can’t believe that people are still this ignorant. What is it going to take to make people understand that food allergies are real and life threateningly serious??

Read the article and give me your opinion….am I overreacting?

Food Allergies and Developmental Delay?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I know I haven’t blogged much lately, but to be honest, I have been really busy with little J. It started about a month ago when I realized that his friends seemed to passing him by. Little J is my angel and the sweetest, most loving child I have ever seen. Yet he really doesn’t speak much. Or communicate much at all. So my dear husband and I decided to have him evaluated. Where we live you can have this done for free through the Regional Center. If your child is “developmentally delayed” then they figure out the services that your child needs and help you get them….all paid for by the county…very cool! A few weeks ago I took Little J to get evaluated for everything but speech. The results came in and he is well below where he should be.  Then the speech eval….he is well below where he should be for that too (not a surprise in the speech department). Now he is going to have therapy 12 hours a week! (I am really excited and hopeful that it will work for him!)  After I got over the initial shock, I started to wonder if there was a correlation betwen developmental delays and food allergies. Anyone out there in the same situation we are in?? I would love to hear any and all stories!

SPEWD Free has A New Medical Advisor

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Hi everyone!

As you know, I started the SPEWD Free Food Allergy Support Group on Meetup. We needed a medical advisor and I finally got the courage to ask Little J’s gastroenterologist of he would do it. And he said yes! So our new medical advisor is Dr. Daniel Thomas! Dr. Thomas is head of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He was named one of the Best Doctors 2007-2008 and one of Pasadena Magazine’s Best Doctors.  For more information on Dr. Thomas click here Dr. Daniel Thomas .

I can’t thank Dr. Thomas enough for agreeing to be our medical advisor!
