New Recipe: Lemon Berry Pie

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Fourth of July is almost here! (where is this year going??) I know that here , in Southern California, it is finally starting to warm up and feel like summer. I have also heard that Florida is getting particularly hot! So I decided that we all needed a refreshing SPEWD Free dessert, that could travel to wherever you are going.

Lemon berry pie is a twist on your typical lemon merangue pie. No merangue, for one thing. Check out the recipes page here: Lemon Berry Pie to see my recipe for this refeshing Fourth of July treat!

**** WARNING: THIS BLOG POSTING CONTAINS SOY ****

Ok, well the blog posting doesn’t actually contain soy, but the products contained within do.

This weekend we decided  to go to Claim Jumper for dinner. At first I wasn’t sure what we would feed him. But I called ahead and found that Claim Jumper is awesome. Yes, it is a little expensive but I think it is well worth it. When we got to the restaurant I noticed that on the bottom of the menu there is small print that says to inform your server of any allergies and they will try to accommodate you. I told our server that Little J has allergies to Dairy, Eggs, and Peanuts and she suggested the barbecue chicken breast kids meal. I asked what was in the barbecue sauce and she went to the kitchen to find out. To my surprise, she returned with a bottle of the sauce for me to look at. The barbecue sauce contained soy, but no other allergens. I then asked what came on the mixed vegetables. She told me that they were usually roasted with butter but that it would be no problem to get them steamed dry. So we ordered Little J barbecue chicken, steamed veggies and apple slices. It cost about $8.00, but the portions were HUGE and we took the leftovers home for his dinner the next night. I think that Claim Jumper is a great place for anyone with food allergies, they are careful and accommodating. :-)   To locate one near you click here:  Claim Jumper

Soy and Wheat!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Little J can finally eat soy and wheat without any reaction! I think I might be having a little too much fun with feeding him, but he is really enjoing getting to try new foods. I went to one of our local health food stores the other day and scoured the market for new things for him. Some things he loves and some things he hates. One of Little J’s favorite new foods is Amy’s Kitchen Baked Ziti Kids meal.   The baked ziti meal is Gluten, Dairy, and Lactose free! It does however, contain soy and almonds. I have tried frozen kids meals on Little J in the past and he was never in to them, so I wasn’t expecting much…. the meal came with a generous portion of ziti, some broccoli, a piece of foccacia bread, and apple dessert. On top of the meal was a cute temporary tattoo (Which Little J just adored). I microwaved the meal for him and took the apples and put them aside so he would eat the rest first. About five minutes after he sat down with it, Little J said “Mommy? More Please!” and pointed to the freezer. I handed him his apple dessert and he was happy. :-) I love Amy’s Kitchen and so does little J! And how can you argue with all natural kids meals? I am so excited and wish that Amy’s would make more dairy free kids meals.

I definitely recommend these meals to everyone who can eat them. Here is the website for Amy’s : Amy’s Kitchen

What’s Going On?

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Wow! So much is going on right now. Little J has therapists coming every morning and has grown immensely! He is talking all the time and we are potty training (Any advice would be appriciated!). And then about two weeks ago we got some great news.  The gastro doc told us that Little J had outgrown his allergies to soy and wheat. So we started giving Little J a tiny bit of soy every day. And Little J broke out in an ugly case of head to toe eczema……so now we are waiting a week and then we will try again. Has this happened to anyone else?

On another note, if you haven’t checked out the recipes section lately, go check it out. There are a ton of new recipes!
