Q: Do you have any tips on eating out with food allergies?

Thanks!

Jane

A: Hi Jane! I have just recently started letting Little J eat out. Here are some things I do when I know Little J is going to eat at a restaurant.

1. Call ahead. I usually call the restaurant ahead of time to see if they will be able to accommodate Little J’s allergies. I like to get a manager on the phone and I take down their name.

2. When I get to the restaurant I ask for the manager. I tell them about Little J’s food allergies and how severe they are.

3.When the food comes, I make sure to check it and taste it before I give it to Little J

4. Be prepared. I always have benadryl and the Epi-pen at the ready. I also have a meal in my bag for Little J just in case the restaurant doesn’t work out.

What do you do when you go out to eat??

FDA Recalls for July 18 – 24, 2009

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This week there was only one food related recall. It is not food allergy related, but I use cilantro in cooking and I thought some of you might too. So here it is:

Sweet Superior Fruit LTD Recalls Cilantro (Coriander) because of possible Salmonella contamination.  The recalled cilantro was sold at Sweet Superior Fruit in McAllen, Texas  and in the surrounding areas of Texas. If you have purchased the cilantro you can return it to the place of purchase. For more information, click here : Sweet Superior Fruit LTD Recalls Cilantro

New Food Allergy Treatment in U.K.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

All around the world reasearchers are tring to try to find a cure for food allergies. In the U.K. they have found that giving small amounts of the allergen and gradually increasing the amount of allergen can cure some food allergies. I wonder why we don’t do this in the U.S. yet…

Ask The SPEWD Free Mom – July 22,2009

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Lately several of you have emailed me with two questions. So today I am going to answer them both.

Q: Where can I find soy and dairy free margarine?

A: I struggled with this for a very long time. Sometimes you can find dairy free, soy free margarine around the Jewish Holiday Passover, but then it disappears until the holiday comes around again. SO I started making my own soy free, dairy free margarine. Click here for the recipe : SPEWD Free Margarine

Here is the second question:

Q: What kind of bread do you use and where can I get it?

A: I use Food For Life Brown Rice Bread. It is usually in the freezer section. I like to stick it in the toaster to thaw and then make Little J a sandwich. I think this bread is the best, but Food food for life makes several gluten free / wheat free varieties which you can check out here : Food For Life Gluten Free / Wheat Free Breads

I hope this helps! If you have a question for the SPEWD Free Mom, email heather@spewdfree.com

New Recipe – Fig Salad with Honey Vinagrette

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I love figs! Really love them! When Little J and I went to Costco yesterday and I saw that they had figs, I was overcome with joy and had to buy them. It turns out Little J loves figs too. :-) But I don’t want any to go to waste and it is about 100 degrees here so I thought I would come up with a new way to eat them. So here it is: Fig Salad with Honey Vinagrette.

Try it and tell me what you think!

New Finds – Part Four

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Ok…This is a BIG ONE if you live in California, Nevada, Utah or Arizona or are going to visit. I LOVE In-N-Outand it is a California legend. They have the best burgers and that’s about it. In-N-Out has a basic menu and a long wait. Everyone loves it! So after I ate there last week I called to find out if there was anything Little J could eat. For those of you that have peanut allergies, they do not use any peanut products in any of their stores. And there are no eggs or dairy in their hamburger buns. The hamburgers are 100 percent beef and the fries 100 percent potato. They have a lettuce wrapped burger if you can’t have gluten. So Little J can have a burger with no spread and fries. (the spread has eggs and dairy). YEAH!!!

Q: I am going to be traveling with my toddler, who has multiple food allergies. Do you have any travel tips?

Sarah

A: Hi Sarah! I am glad you asked this question. Little J, my husband and I, are actually catching a red eye out tonight to go visit some family. Here are my tips for travelling with a food allergic child.

1. Check and see if the airline serves peanuts. If they do, tell them that your child has a peanut allergy. Some airlines will make an annoucement and then not serve peanuts. Other airlines will try to put a “cushion” of non – peanut eating passengers around you. Either way, don’t forget the epi – pen (just in case).

2. Pack snacks. Enjoy Life snack bars are individually packaged and awesome. Little J also loves freeze dried fruit from Funky Monkey. Kashi also has a new line of cereal bars that are dairy and egg free that you might want to try.

3. Consider taking an overnight flight. People tend to want to sleep and don’t bring (or eat) as much food.

Those are my Top Three tips. Think I missed something? Want to add something? Leave me a comment.
